How Now Shall We Live?
by Charles Colson and Nancy Pearcey, Tyndale House, $13.59p, 1999, 574 pp (4720) |  buy the book

What do you get when you combine How Should We Then Live? by Francis Schaeffer with vivid and engaging story lines that pack a powerful illustrative punch, and add world-class writing that is dedicated to helping Christians develop a strong biblical worldview for the new century?  You get How Now Shall We Live? by Charles Colson and Nancy Pearcey.

Using Schaeffer’s above mentioned book and a host of his other writings as a foundation, Colson and Pearcey develop a five-hundred-page masterpiece on a biblical worldview.  It points out both obvious and subtle flaws in various world views such as: commercialism, cosmology, Darwinism, determinism, feminism, hedonism, libertinism, Marxism, modernism, naturalism, and the New Age movement among others. Using the grid of Creation, Fall, and Redemption the authors point out the good, bad, and ugly of the different worldviews.  With a combination of instruction and story they put forth a solid argument that the biblical worldview is the only one that truly fits in the grid.   This is not an aggressive “put-down” book.  On the contrary, it shows flawed world views taken to their logical conclusion.

Though the book is long, the good writing and the stories and illustrations make it readable for most lay Christians.  In fact, the purpose of the book is to help Christians in all walks of life know that Christianity is not only the way of eternal life with Christ but also gives us a sincere and profound purpose here on earth as we wait for His glorious and gracious return.  While readers may disagree with some minor points, for the most part How Now Shall We Live? edifies the Christian’s soul while challenging the non-Christian’s take on the world.  This is a great book for a semester or two in small groups, Bible studies, college courses, advanced high school classes or personal enrichment for the person in the pulpit or in the pew.
