Book Review
Grace to Stand Firm, Grace to Grow
Carol Ruvolo, P&R Press, 2003, 251 pages, $11.99p (6422) |  buy the book

This book is a breath of fresh air in a climate of personality driven, “non-denominational” studies. Carol’s Light in the Path Series focused on teaching God’s word with no apologetics for Reformed Theology. This study on 1st and 2nd Peter focuses on Peter’s teaching on God’s grace to us. Most of the first century Christians…

“…were being routinely harassed because they were Christians, and many were being harangued by glib teachers of heresy. …Satan’s spiritual shotgun is not a new weapon. He’s been blasting away at the worthy work of believers down through the centuries. And when he succeeds in dimming God’s glory by damaging a believer’s perception of grace, he jumps for joy.”

This study helps the student walk with the first century Christians as Peter encouraged them. The author states that “their worthy walk would not disintegrate into an unworthy limp if they understood and applied God’s revealed truth about grace…. If they fortified their perception of grace, they would not succumb to the double-barreled assault of persecution and false doctrine.”

Systematically covering each aspect of Peter’s teaching on grace, the first section of the study focuses on the grace God gives us to stand firm. The chapter titles are a good sample of the book’s content: Hope of Salvation, Joy of Divine Testing, From Doctrine to Practice, Attractiveness of God’s People, Appeal of Free Submission, Power of Humble Witness, Cure for Short-Timer Syndrome, Team Concept of Humble Servants.

With our minds centered on the grace God gives us to stand firm, the remainder of the study deals with the grace God gives us to grow. The author focuses on the authority of scripture, the dangers of “twisted teaching” and the certainty of God’s promises.
