August 2007 Book Reviews
by Sally Llyod-Jones There must a new children’s Bible storybook coming off the press every week. How confusing if you are looking for an aid in teaching children or having devotions with your own little ones. However, here’s one you will want to buy. We train teachers at CE&P to teach Christ in all of Scripture. Sally Lloyd Jones knows it takes the whole Bible to tell the whole story. Jesus is the piece that makes the whole puzzle fit together and you can’t miss it in this great Genesis to Revelation storybook for children. You have to read it to understand what a masterful job has been done is seeing Christ in every story. There is one disclaimer – watch out for the description of baptism in the story of Jesus’ baptism if you hold to covenant baptism. It’s not worth throwing the baby out with the bath water (no pun intended), so get this book. You will enjoy the fresh help in teaching God’s story to children.
by Irene Howat These ten books include short biographies on great Christians from Polycarp to Nate Saint, Susannah Wesley to Ruth Bell Graham – Christians in every century of the church who lived their lives for Christ and his Kingdom. These books can be read to young children (4-7) and read by 8-12 year-olds. At the end of each 10-12 page story is a Fact File, giving more information about the time in which this character lived; a Keynote, emphasizing the Christian choice that was made; a Think, making personal application to the reader; and a Prayer, for guidance to follow these believers as they followed Christ. These four points make for great discussion in a school or family devotion setting. There is also a quiz at the end of the book – three questions on each character. Many young people who are not bookworms enjoy these books. The affable style in which these books are written challenge the reader to consider how they might make a difference, use their talents and change the world by obeying their King Jesus.
by Jean Watson, Adapted from John Bunyan’s classic When my “twenty-something” children were young, this was our favorite family devotion book. I also used it on Sunday evenings to teach Pilgrim’s Progress in our church. The book began to fall apart and I realized that it was out of print. Oh, no! Many kids, parents, and teachers were asking me where to get a copy. I told my wonderful friend Ian Thompson at Christian Focus my dilemma and he persuaded his company to get the rights from Tyndale House and print “my” book. It’s ready and better than the first! The same great art work with more readable print, this book puts emphasis on all the great characters in Pilgrim’s journey giving Scripture references on the teaching that each of them represent. I have my old friend back in a new cover. Read through the book with your family. Your children will want to read it again on their own.
